Research Says Physical Pain Is Directly Connected To Emotional Stress And Trauma
New studies have found that the source of your chronic pain may very well be caused by stress and emotional trauma and not a physical injury.
Chronic pain is characterized by physical pain that lasts longer than the natural healing process would normally take. People who have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder are at highest risk.
You're probably aware that stress can lead to physiological issues like headaches, stomach aches, and an irritable bowel.
What you may not realize is that it can cause other physical issues and chronic pain. One reason for this is because the more stressed out a person is, the more tense they tend to be.
Researchers for decades have studied the mind-body link between emotions and overall health. They found that somewhere between 15 and 30 percent of patience diagnosed with chronic disease also suffer from PTSD.
Trauma happens "when our ability to respond to a perceived threat is in some way overwhelming," writes Peter Levine, a trauma expert.
Physical Pain Is Directly Connected To Emotional Stress And Trauma
Some researchers don't agree with this definition of trauma but can agree with the idea that trauma can induce physiological symptoms like numbing, pain, nightmares, flashbacks, and avoidance behavior.
"Whether or not trauma was connected to the event or condition that originated their pain, having a chronic pain condition is traumatizing in and of itself," writes Maggie Phillips, the author of Reversing Chronic Pain.
And since our nervous systems go into survival mode during trauma, it can be hard to recover.
"Research has shown that, under ordinary conditions, many traumatized people, including rape victims, battered women and abused children, have a fairly good psychosocial adjustment," says Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, a renowned trauma expert.
"However, they do not respond to stress the way other people do. Under pressure, they may feel (or act) as if they were traumatized all over again."
Whenever I hear the word ‘hypnotize’ I immediately think of André the Hilarious Hypnotist. I’ve never been to one of his shows, but I hear he gets people to do wild stuff. Riding an imaginary racehorse and not knowing about it? I’ll pass, thanks.
Entertainment is one thing, but what about using hypnotherapy as a way to heal past traumas or rid yourself of bad habits? Some say it works, while others are convinced it’s snake oil. Having never been hypnotized myself, I decided to do a little digging to find out how effective, if at all, it actually is.
Hypnotherapy vs. Hypnosis?
But first, let’s clear up a common misconception. While both hypnotherapy and hypnosis achieve the same goal (guiding someone into a deep state of relaxation where they’re highly responsive to suggestion), the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy is significant.
Hypnotherapy is practiced by a licensed therapist with a goal to improve overall wellness, whereas hypnosis is used as a comedic tool to get you to speak ‘moon language.’ I’m being flip, but the modality does have an admittedly poor reputation.
The point here is that you shouldn’t dismiss hypnotherapy out of hand. Put your judgements and preconceptions aside and make your decision to try it (or not) with an informed and open mind.

Hypnotherapy vs Hypnosis
What is hypnotherapy, exactly?
According to Psychology Today, “hypnotherapy is a trance-like state of focus and concentration achieved with the help of a clinical hypnotherapist.” They liken it to that feeling of being completely absorbed, whether by a book, a movie or simply your own thoughts.
Positive psychology cofounder Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi refers to this as a state of ‘flow’ and claims it’s an important contributor to creativity and well-being. For the purposes of hypnotherapy, being in this deep meditative state allows you to turn your focus inward.
Oftentimes, we’re so caught up in whatever is wrong that we fail to comprehend our inherent ability to right the situation. Hypnotherapy allows you to go within and discover the tools you need to make the necessary changes and take control of your life.
In his TED talk The amazing story of the man who gave us modern pain relief, Latif Nasser tells the story of John J. Bonica. Dubbed pain relief’s founding father by Time Magazine, Bonica claimed that pain is the most complex human experience. One that involves your past life, your current life, your interactions, even your family.
If that’s the case, then there’s no reason to believe it can’t be managed by something like hypnotherapy. According to David R. Patterson and Mark P. Jensen, professors at the University of Washington in Seattle and two of the nation’s leading experts on hypnosis, it can.
Patterson proved the claim during a talk he presented on hypnotism and pain control at a burn unit at Vanderbilt University. The doctors were skeptical, so he offered to demonstrate his technique.
Although initially reluctant to be hypnotized, the patient eventually agreed and quickly slipped into a deep, peaceful trance, allowing the nurses to remove his bandages and clean his wounds without so much as a whimper.
This is far from an isolated case. More than 75 percent of arthritis sufferers who’ve used hypnosis for pain relief have experienced significant improvement. In fact, research suggests that hypnosis may be more effective in the treatment of acute and chronic pain than conventional methods.
What can hypnotherapy be used for?
Hypnotherapy can be applied in two different ways. The first is suggestion therapy, where the trance-like state makes one better able to respond to suggestions. This approach is useful for changing behaviors like smoking as well as for dealing with pain.
The second is analysis. This approach enables therapist and patient to take advantage of the relaxed state to explore psychological issues, such as figuring out the root cause of a disorder or unlocking the memory of a traumatic past event.

A Kahuna is a “keeper of secrets” in the ancient Hawaiian tradition, and they practice a special healing art called Ho’oponopono. Within their glossary of loving attention and creative action, problems are solved and stress is reduced by accessing information in ways that are not ‘traditional.’
A descendant of Queen Liluokalani and a native Hawaiian, Morrnah Simeona has been invited to teach her wisdom as a Kahuna all over the world. She explains:
We are the sum total of our experiences, which is to say that we are burdened by our pasts. When we experience stress or fear in our lives, if we would look carefully, we would find that the cause is actually a memory. It is the emotions which are tied to these memories which affect us now. The subconscious associates an action or person in the present with something that happened in the past. When this occurs, emotions are activated and stress is produced.
Four Little Phrases
Though the Kahuna use many devices to impart their wisdom, Ho’oponopono is on the top of their list of effective tools. It involves primarily utilizing just four little phrases and a conscious look at an issue to evoke new insights and forgiveness. These are The Crazy Simple Wisdom Of Ho’oponopono are as follows:

I love you.
It is profoundly straightforward wisdom, but really difficult for many of us to practice.
The Crazy Simple Wisdom Of Ho’oponopono
In this ridiculously simple system, there is no need to analyze, solve, manage, or cope with problems. You simply offer them to Divine Mind in the context of please, thank you, I love you, and I’m sorry.
In my many years living in Hawaii I saw this simple practice work effectively over and over again. It was uncanny how the ‘aloha spirit’ that tourists and locals alike in Hawaii gloat about was perpetuated through ideas like Ho’oponopono. Total strangers became friends in no time, and saying ‘I love you’ was an everyday occurrence. Saying ‘I’m sorry’ or ‘thank you’ was continuous music to my ears, and this inspired in me – a formerly mainland dwelling, break-neck speed, egoic-go-getter, to cool my jets and enjoy the trade winds. I slowed down long enough to see that I was creating so much of my own stress. It inspired me to forgive – even when that forgiveness needed to be directed toward myself.
Clearing Karmic Patterns
Now, as a yoga teacher, I use Morrnah’s advice aimed at those in the healing profession:
It is important to clear Karmic patterns with your clients before you start working with them, so that you don’t activate old stuff between you. Perhaps you shouldn’t be working with that person at all. Only the Divinity knows. If you work with a person and it isn’t your business, you can take on the person’s entire problem and everything associated with it. This can cause burnout. The Ho’oponopono gives the tools to prevent that from happening.
Peace, Pono, Practice
Matthew P. James, PhD had the great luck to study Huna, the ancient healing art which also uses Ho’oponopono, with the late Uncle George Na’ope who was named by the State of Hawaii as a Golden Living Treasure. His family was chosen to carry on a distinct lineage within the Huna tradition. In an article written for Psychology Today he says:
We’ve been led to believe for so many years that we are disempowered, that we live at the whim of circumstances around us. No doubt external factors – the loss of a job, our health or an important relationship – can affect our outlook. Yet there are some basic ideas from Hawaiian culture that we can reclaim to tap into a sense of empowerment, peace, Pono.
As someone who was blessed to live and work with individuals that embodied the best of the Hawaiian culture, I can enthusiastically support this crazy simple wisdom. I hope we all practice it collectively more often, no matter our cultural background.
At the same time, it’s important to remember that in some cases, forgiveness implies judgement, that something “wrong” has been done. Instead of thinking in terms of “right” and “wrong,” it’s better to view these instances as experiences, stepping stones and opportunities.
They are known as “fapstronauts,” and they are part of a growing community of hundreds of thousands of men and women who are abstaining from masturbation to internet pornography.
Their community is called “NoFap,” and its founder, Alexander Rhodes, is a man on a mission to educate and inspire the world about the damaging effects of masturbating to porn.
What could possibly be wrong with harmless masturbation, you might wonder? Aren’t we meant to enjoy the simple pleasure centres of our bodies?
According to Rhodes, masturbating to porn isn’t harmless at all. In fact, it is a silent epidemic of disastrous proportion.
“The emergence of internet pornography has changed the landscape of sexual development and relationships in a way never-before-seen in human history,” he said during his speech at the Out of the Shadows national press conference. “As a result, countless people are having their sexual tastes shaped by porn producers rather than real, human, experiences. These days, exposure to pornography seems to be a virtual certainty and young men [and women] are therefore automatically ‘opted-in’ to potential addiction, relational difficulty, porn-induced erectile dysfunction, and more,” he continued.
During his speech, Rhodes discusses the idea that porn is a relatively new variable in human evolution, and we are only beginning to see the repercussions of its use arise in the current generation of men and women.
He says exposure to porn is so rampant that it is practically mandatory for children to come into contact with some image or video before puberty. He quotes an Australian study which asked 258 male participants about their exposure to porn. Only one reported they’d never been exposed. Even more concerning, the median age of first exposure was 13 for males and 16 for females.
In this way, Rhodes says, kids are learning about sexuality through porn before their first kiss.
Frequent masturbation to porn is causing erectile dysfunction in a generation of men.
Today, a large community of “fapstronauts” is coming forward to talk about the impact this exposure has had on their lives. They report heavy reliance on porn and masturbation is manifesting in disturbing ways — erectile dysfunction (ED) and anorgasmia, the inability to orgasm during partnered sex, being a few of them.

According to a Kinsey report, in 1948 less than 1% of men under 30 had ED. In 2012, Swiss researchers found this number at 30%.
And the effects of watching porn span far beyond the physical, says Rhodes.
“Different studies on porn users are showing associations with sexual dysfunction, brain hypofrontality, desensitization, sensitization to porn cues, increased stress, less motivation, relationship problems, decreased sexual satisfaction, and other life-altering detriments.”

Numerous scientific studies have found that excessive porn use has biological and behavioural ramifications.
Rhodes also stresses that he and the NoFap community are in no way ‘sex negative’:
Being skeptical of pornography is not the same thing as being sex negative – there’s a huge difference between pornography and sex. In porn, the viewer is a voyeur, rather than a participant. It is on a screen. It is available in virtually endless amounts and pirated all over porn tube sites without monetary cost. It is always accessible, just a tap or click away. To our brain’s reward system, this can be an especially enticing quick and repeatable path to an orgasm, compared to partnered sex. In fact, many people who are quitting porn are doing so in the pursuit of better sex. Quitting porn is sex positive.
He notes many NoFap community members are there to improve their interpersonal relationships, whether it be for a marriage, a relationship, or single life. For others, it is simply a challenge of willpower — to seize control of your sexuality and turn it into superpowers.
“There are many, many different reasons to join but we’re all on NoFap with one goal – to help each other abstain from PMO (porn/masturbation/orgasm).”
Men And Women Report Incredible Life Shifts After Quitting Porn and Masturbation
Within the many pages of the NoFap forums, whether directly on the NoFap website or within the large and fast-growing Reddit community, it is easy to see the profound shifts taking place for people who’ve succeeded in the NoFap challenge, which consists of setting an intention to abstain from masturbation and watching porn for a certain amount of time and then riding it out.
The NoFap community is growing at a rapid pace.
Participants report diverse and overwhelmingly positive results from their efforts, like increased confidence, reduced anxiety, improved focus and memory, increased concentration, improved social skills, deeper sleeps, enhanced abilities to feel emotions, less brain fog, and even seemingly being more attractive to females.
While some might say these are rather normal powers, fapstronauts say that after years of feeling depressed, scattered. and unmotivated, the onset of these new changes feel as incredible as real ‘ superpowers‘ would.
My relationship with porn began at the age of 13 with nude Playboy photos of Pamela Anderson and Jenny McCarthy. This was in the days of dial-up Internet, and I was initiated by my childhood best friend at the time. Although this did not seem pornographic, relative to what my peers were beginning to look at, I now see that this was the beginning. It began a cycle where every woman I met was judged by these photogenic standards, and felt no real attraction towards most girls in high school, despite being popular and well-liked for my prowess on the guitar.
He explained his warped attitude toward women posed issues in his sex life.
“None of the girls I met in college could compare to the standards in my own mind. What few girls I was attracted to, I felt incapable of asking out for a date, and often would simply fantasize about them instead.”
He admits he developed an addiction to porn, and at 31 he discovered the NoFap community.
“Since then my relationship with both pornography and far more innocent triggers is vastly different. I no longer use porn at all, and no longer place the celebrity notion of beauty on the pedestal either, and am interested in real life and real people, slowly but surely engaging in reality.”
“Fapstronauts” claim that abstaining from porn and masturbation improves their overall confidence and sex lives.

Already, thousands have made the personal decision to leave porn in the past, and have gone on to live more fulfilling lives with improved interpersonal relationships. It’s time we think about and openly discuss our heavy usage of pornography. In the meantime more and more people around the world will continue to declare their autonomy and reclaim their sexualities from the porn production companies.

Being able to manifest anything in your life means you’re aligned with one important understanding. That the Universe is deeply conscious, benevolent, and is always helping you create whatever is for your highest good. You may not always be certain what your “highest good” may be, and some days you may think you know better than the Universe.
You may believe your highest good comes in the form of a brand new shiny red sports car when in reality it may be the blue mini-van that breaks down every few weeks and forces you to pray. What you need and want in life are not always the same and will change until your vibration is soooo high that you stop placing your ego’s demands over life. To begin receiving anything and everything you want this year 2018, start with being crystal clear about what you are asking for. If you are wishy-washy in any way the Universe feels this, knowing you lack the understanding of the infinite divine soul you truly are, what you really want, and thus delays the manifestation.
Divine Intelligence is always light years beyond what you can imagine it is. It knows you better than you know you. It wants you to be fully satisfied on the deepest levels. If God could form a desire, it’d be that you are soooooo ecstatic, over joyous, and orgasmically happy that you become a smiling laughing ball of bliss! The ironic thing is that this blissful state has nothing to do with manifesting physical results from your ego’s desires, and everything to do with how fully you can show up in this present moment and be receptive to the Now.
Bliss happens instantly when you intimately realize how to surrender and be receptive. You are the soul creator of your entire reality AND you are being fed desires from your karmic past. Nothing is actually yours. This body, this mind, these thoughts…everything is borrowed. When you wake up to this, you’ll be conscious enough to stop focusing your mind on what you don’t want and start living each moment in total appreciation of what is. Your life will feel like a rose petal who is continuously bathing in the glorious morning sunshine. Then you’ll know without a doubt just how amazing every moment of your life actually is in 2018.
I invite you to try something new this year 2018. Anytime you ask for something, anything, from God or anyone…instead of thinking that you don’t have that “thing” just yet, imagine and pretend that you do. Ask as if you already have it now. Ask for what you want by feeling as you already received it. It kind of feels like giving yourself a long warm cozy happy hug!
Practice feeling this feeling all day long and you’ve set in motion the effortless manifestation process. The experience of receiving your every desire means you’ve realized that you are not separate from God and that you never were. The day you permanently retire those habitual thoughts which think you are “separate” from the Divine One Supreme Reality, then the real magical life you’re here to live takes over.

Just watch it, and see how it defines and creates your limitations, problems, solutions, and what your range of opportunities are in this moment. Identifying with past and future thoughts are whats creating a narrowed and shallow experience of life.
It’s the empty mind that is full of “no-thought” that has room for the unlimited experience of reality. Once you trust God enough to let go of controlling this mind, then the most exquisite experience of reality can fall into you.
This highly intelligent Universe knows the grand master plan of your life. It knows every intricate piece of the karmic game your soul is playing. The mind has such a limited perspective on Reality. It tends to demand things show up, and push against time (the Universe) to manifest something for your ego’s gratification.
Yet, when you are opening, surrendering, being willing to receive anything, you can see this bigger picture and feel grounded in this deeply benevolent Universe. From this place you see that each experience serves your highest souls evolution. Your mind may not always agree, it is allowed to have an opinion, yet just realize this is the nature of the argumentative mind.
Find that inside you which has no argument for or against anything. Discover that which is truly at peace and all of the opportunities, people, and resources you desire will present themselves. All you need to do is relax, trust the process and ask with conviction, without any attachment, for what you truly desire. The Universe will support you in the most profound ways to Receive Everything You Want in 2018.

Just do not be afraid of desire. Desire is that fire that keeps the karmic wheel spinning. We need it to give us direction and purpose.

Have you felt hurt or betrayed? Have you ever been so bitter and upset towards a situation or person that you could not imagine forgiving them? Forgiveness from a clinical perspective is the process of relinquishing one’s feeling of resentment and thoughts of vengeance. Forgiveness also includes the process of fostering compassion, generosity, and even love towards those who have inflicted pain.
It is obviously not an easy thing to do. Clinicians will undoubtedly tell you if your wounds are deep and traumas many you will need more time to heal. Nonetheless, forgiveness is possible and I believe necessary. Let me tell you why?
Over 15 years ago there lacked any research on the impact of forgiveness on our health. Thankfully to date, there are hundreds of scientific papers and clinicians ready to share their knowledge with us.
Forgiveness Improves Your Life
Negativity makes cancer grow
Let us start with the impact of staying angry, being frustrated or feeling negative about an event. Dr. Steven Standiford, chief of surgery at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, says that holding onto these negative emotions creates a chronic state of anxiety.
This produces a predictable excess of adrenaline and cortisol, which deplete the production of natural killer cells. These cells are your protection against cancer. If you refuse to forgive it not only makes you sick but can keep you that way.
Since we are on the topic of cancer, a neat randomized controlled trial with over 83 cancer patients evaluated feelings of forgiveness, pessimism, and self-acceptance after taking a course in self-forgiveness. The course taught techniques such as reflection, expressive writing etc.
As expected, the patients that took the course had statistically significant higher scores for self-forgiveness, acceptance, self-improvement, and lower pessimism scores compared to the control group.
How To Forgive Yourself - How To Stop Feeling Guilty
If you think of an old memory of being mistreated, hurt, or offended you automatically start to feel unwell. The fact is that there are immediate emotional and/or physiological responses that occur when you are having these memories. These responses include:
Your blood pressure increases
Your muscles tighten
You start to swell
These are all signs of stress and anxiety. Recent studies show that participants who practice empathy and forgiveness to those who do them wrong have a lowered stress response. To further deepen this point, roughly 1,500 Americans who forgave reported greater satisfaction with their lives, less distress symptoms, less nervousness, and less sadness.
Negativity makes cancer grow
Forgiveness even helps in cases of severe emotional abuse. Women were placed into two treatment groups; the first using techniques such as anger validation, assertiveness, interpersonal skill building, and the second using forgiveness. Women in the forgiveness group had significant improvements in depression scores, post-traumatic stress symptom, self-esteem, less anxiety, and better overall mastery of their life. Months later all these gains were still present! YAY! Forgiveness is powerful!
Forgiveness Positively Impacts Your Immunity
One controlled study assessed 78 medicated HIV patients for feelings, thoughts, and behaviors of forgiveness. Participants who truly forgave had higher percentages of CD4 immune cancer-fighting cells!
The improvement of blood pressure and cardiovagal tone is yet another benefit of forgiveness. Researchers have been able to show that forgiveness has a cardioprotective effect on the heart. While anger, is cardiotoxic, which damages the heart muscle.
Forgiveness Benefits Your Quality of Sleep
One study found that forgiveness of interpersonal transgressions is related to better sleep. While staying resentful, angry or even keeping hostile feelings around relate to a poorer quality of sleep.
The list goes on and on. The health benefits of forgiveness are monumental. Now that you have some facts, think and devise a forgiveness plan. Start by forgiving yourself, and then move onto forgiving others. If you do not know how to forgive, contact a spiritual psychotherapist or psychologist in your area for help.
It is time to let go of past grievances. It is time to feel lighter. It is time to be free of the past to create space for a brighter present!
